Coffee, cardamom, and a Synesso that earns its keep

Coffee Bru has been here long enough to remember when Amsterdam Oost wasn't on anyone's coffee map. Opening in 2010, one of the first specialty bars in the neighbourhood, it helped write the script that others followed. That history shows, not in any self-congratulatory way, but in the easy confidence of a place that knows exactly what it is.

Walk into YUSU on a weekday morning and the first thing you notice is the range of people already there, students with laptops, locals picking up a flat white before the commute, small groups lingering over something from the pastry counter. Kick van Doorn and Nicole Lieuw opened this place in September 2020, and the fact that it's earned 580 Google reviews at 4.6 is less surprising once you've spent an hour inside.

There are coffee shops that stock Ethiopian beans, and then there is Kaffa Koffie, a place where the entire programme begins and ends with Ethiopia, and has done since Marcos Desta opened the doors in 2007.

There is no door to open at Viet Drip. You find the cart somewhere in Oosterpark, and that is already part of the point.

Bapa Collective doesn't fit neatly into the standard Amsterdam specialty coffee template, and that's precisely what makes it worth the trip to Oost.

Edward Donkers spent 31 years as a nurse before opening De Koffie Broeder in 2019. That backstory matters, because it shows in how the place is run, there's a patience here, an attention to how people feel when they walk through the door, that you don't always find in cafés opened by people who've only ever worked in hospitality.

Most hotel coffee bars exist to serve guests who haven't found anywhere better yet. EAST is not that. Operating out of Hotel Casa, a property with a genuine social mission, housing students during term time, the coffee bar has built its own reputation in Amsterdam Oost over the past decade, independent of the rooms upstairs.
