Amsterdam · The Netherlands
Discover IJburg's quiet waterside coffee scene in Amsterdam, independent cafés, IJmeer views, and a pace far removed from the city centre.
IJburg is a planned neighbourhood on artificial islands in the IJmeer, six kilometres east of the centre. Espressofabriek, one of the earliest specialty operators in the Netherlands, open since 2005, anchors the scene here, bringing in-house roasting to a part of the city that otherwise relies on roasters like Bocca and White Label Coffee.
Two located venues operate in the neighbourhood, both sitting near Haringbuisdijk and Bert Haanstrahof square. That is a thin count, and single-origin pour-over options are limited. What IJburg offers instead is waterside terraces, open IJmeer views, and a pace the centre cannot match.
Come on a weekday morning when the tram ride from Amsterdam Centraal takes around 25 minutes on the 26 line. In summer, pair a visit with Blijburg beach. Expect espresso-led menus, good food, and no queue.
The full list is in the explorer above. These are the ones we'd actually send a friend to.
Award-winning espresso, far from the tourist noise.
Serious coffee inside a genuinely child-friendly space.
Only if you want the experience as much as the cup. Two venues is a thin scene, but Espressofabriek IJburg scores 8.5 and the waterside setting is genuinely different from anything in the centre.
Take tram 26 directly from Centraal, it runs to IJburg in around 25 minutes and drops you close to both venues.
Coffee and Kids, owned by Raquel, is set up for exactly that: it runs workshops and playgroups, serves Lot 61 coffee, and has babyccinos on the menu.
No. There is no dedicated roaster operating a retail space in the neighbourhood. Espressofabriek does its own roasting but the closest thing to a roastery retail experience in Amsterdam's east is elsewhere in the city.
