Photo of Ripsnorter in Rotterdam

Ripsnorter

9.2
Laurenskwartier

There's no laptop crowd here, no long tables, no pretense that this is anywhere but a working tasting bar. Ripsnorter occupies a bright corner counter in the Laurenskwartier, and everything about the compact room signals that the coffee, not the seating, is the point.

Cafecito Meent

7.7
Laurenskwartier

White walls, steel shelving, bags of house-roasted beans stacked like inventory in a design store. Cafecito Meent doesn't do warmth through clutter. It does it through precision, and that's a different kind of comfort if you're the sort of person who wants to see the extraction numbers before you order.

Crave Coffee & Bakery

7.5
Laurenskwartier

Crave sits on a quiet passage in the Laurenskwartier, the kind of side street you find by accident on the way from Blaak to the market. Inside, the room is bright and compact, with the baking happening somewhere out of sight in a basement kitchen below the counter. Everything that comes up from downstairs, cruffins, babka, layered cakes, savoury rolls, is entirely plant-based, and Crave holds the LEKKER VEGA Keurmerk Goud to prove it's not an afterthought bolted onto a regular bakery menu.

Photo of Nine Bar in Rotterdam

Nine Bar

7.5
Laurenskwartier

Half the appeal of Nine Bar is the trick of it: walk in from Botersloot and you can walk straight out the other side onto the Nieuwemarkt square. Two terraces, one bar in between. On a clear weekday morning, that back terrace catches the sun in a way the neighbourhood's other cafes don't, and it fills accordingly with market shoppers, young professionals on a coffee break, and a scattering of dogs tied to chair legs.

Photo of Round & Round in Rotterdam

Round & Round

7.5
Laurenskwartier

Walk in mid-afternoon and the room does most of the work: pale wood, low light, a hush that owes as much to the no-laptop weekend policy as to the crowd itself. This is a tea room that happens to serve espresso, and once you know that, the whole menu makes sense.

✦ The area

One roaster, multiplied across a district

Laurenskwartier is postwar Rotterdam at its plainest, low blocks around the rebuilt Laurenskerk, no gables, no postcard streets. What it has instead is density: this is the rare neighbourhood where a single bar, Ripsnorter, appears under four names within a few minutes' walk, run by a founder with actual barista championship medals, so the baseline extraction here is higher than the architecture suggests.

Outside the Ripsnorter cluster, the district skews toward clean, minimalist counters built for a quick stop between errands, Cafecito's two branches, Crave's plant-based bakery, Round & Round's matcha-and-cake pairing. Nine Bar is the one place with real terrace sprawl, spanning Botersloot to Nieuwemarkt, useful when the others are standing-room only.

Go before 11am on a weekday if you want a seat and fresh pastry, especially at the Ripsnorter venues where croissants and the Bloody Ripper freezer menu are best early. Weekends bring Markthal shoppers cutting through, and laptop room is scarce almost everywhere except Round & Round on weekdays and the mezzanine at Cafecito Laurenskwartier.

Laurenskwartier coffee questions

What is the best coffee shop in Laurenskwartier?

Ripsnorter, in its various forms (Ripsnorter, Ripsnorter Coffee, Ripsnorter Café, Ripsnorter Coffee Roasters), scores highest by a wide margin, all run under founder Zjevaun Janga, a multi-time Dutch Barista Champion. If you only stop once in this neighbourhood, make it one of these.

Is Laurenskwartier good for working on a laptop?

Not really. Most bars here are counter-focused with limited seating, and Ripsnorter's four locations are explicitly not laptop-friendly. Cafecito Meent, Cafecito Laurenskwartier, and Round & Round (weekdays only) are your options if you need to sit and work.

When should I visit for the freshest pastries?

Before 11am. Ripsnorter's croissants and Crave's pistachio cruffins both sell fastest in the morning, and Round & Round's cake rolls can be gone by afternoon.

Why are there so many Ripsnorter locations?

It's one operation, not four competitors, spread across the neighbourhood under slightly different names (café, coffee, roasters). Each shares the same Bloody Ripper menu of frozen, single-dose competition microlots, so the choice between them comes down to which is closest, not which is better.
