A peninsula worth the detour

Katendrecht is a former harbour peninsula cut off from central Rotterdam by the Maas, rough for most of the twentieth century and remade fast once artists and chefs found the cheap industrial space. The coffee here reflects that arc: small in number, but run by people who care about what's in the cup rather than chasing footfall.

What exists clusters loosely around Deliplein and the Fenix Food Factory on Katendrechtse Hoofd. Kopi Soesoe leans into neighbourhood-living-room territory, laptop-free, vinyl on, condensed milk stirred up from the bottom of the glass. O Anatolian Café & Bakery sits inside the Fenix museum complex, more about Turkish coffee and çılbür alongside a Michelin-trained chef's baking than dialled-in espresso.

This isn't a crawl neighbourhood, you won't stack six stops in an afternoon. Go for a slow morning bakkie on Kopi Soesoe's terrace, or a weekend visit to Fenix Food Factory when the hall is busiest and O Anatolian's counter is in full swing.
