Dune is the cafe arm of Shokunin Coffee Roasters, opened by Jelle van Rossum in 2022 in Rotterdam's Scheepvaartkwartier. The neighbourhood sits in the shadow of the Erasmus Bridge, and the space reads like someone who roasts coffee for a living decided to build the room they actually wanted to drink it in.

Rotter­dam has no shortage of places to grab a coffee near its landmarks. Kuub is not one of those places. Founded in late 2023 by Dean, whose CV includes stints at Man Met Bril Koffie and Giraffe Coffee Roasters, it operates with a focus that most weekend-only venues don't bother with: a rotating cast of Rotterdam micro-roasters, a filter menu that actually changes, and a La Marzocco Linea Mini R that's clearly being looked after.

Most plant-based restaurants treat coffee as an afterthought. BACKYARD does not. Rotterdam's Giraffe Coffee supplies the beans, and the espresso menu covers the full range from cortado to flat white without any obvious weak links. It is not a coffee-first space, but the coffee is good enough to bring you back on its own terms.

The Tea Lab opened in 2013, which in Rotterdam specialty coffee terms makes it a veteran. It has never tried to be a pure coffee bar, and that honesty is part of what makes it work. The dual identity is stated plainly: Giraffe Coffee Roasters on the espresso side, a rotating cast of more than 40 loose-leaf teas on the other. Neither programme is treated as decoration for the other.

Fast coffee for a city in motion

Centrum's coffee scene is built for people between places, off the metro at Blaak, cutting through the Markthal, headed somewhere with a deadline attached. Dune and Kuub Coffee carry the serious end of it, both technically sharp, both unbothered by the tourist traffic that surrounds them.

The venues here skew toward food-forward and laptop-friendly rather than pure espresso theatre. Dune leans brunch and single-origin filter, Kuub Coffee does the espresso-and-matcha crowd well despite sitting inside a landmark, and BACKYARD and The Tea Lab fill out the plant-based, all-day end of the spectrum.

Weekday mornings before 10am are the easiest window, before the Markthal crowds arrive. Weekends suit Kuub Coffee specifically, it holds up under tourist volume better than most spots this close to a landmark.
